Just went here for the first time. Really really good. One of the best - maybe THE best - veggie burgers I've ever had. I'm not a fan of sauce on my burgers cuz it's usually gross and oozing and overpowering, but this was subtle and tasty. Fries were great too. Thin and cut right there in the store. Would love to see a veggie dog on the menu. But that's really the only negative.

We tried Big Al's based on Yelp reviews and we aren't disappointed. Midday Wednesday and the place was packed with locals in everything from suits and stilletos to work boots and dreadlocks. The burgers were amazing and the fries were handcut perfection. 2 single patty combos fed our family of 4 for less than $20.

I just don't get the highly rated reviews. Maybe it's being from Vegas and having tons of high-end burger joints, but this place simply doesn't pass the mustard test. First off, the patty took up only 2/3 of the bun. That makes it hard to eat properly. Flatten the patties for crying out loud. I ordered the New Mexico burger and when it arrived, the pepper on the bottom had made the entire bottom half of the bun soggy. Who likes a soggy bun? But what really made the burger non-digestible was the tomato slice. It was a slice of not-quite-ripe tomato and it was taken from the end of the tomato so that the core was exceptionally difficult to eat - impossible in fact. See the picture! In my opinion, a key test of any burger joint, especially a high-end one, is their dedication to serving only the best of the best when it ones to tomato slices. Big Al's failed miserably. Then there were the fries. Ordered the buffalo fries but was not excited about the flavor or texture. Ordinarily, buffalo fries have more of a "kick" to them. There is, of course, an up charge for a combo. It's $3.00 and what they offer for $3.00 seems to be fries and a drink. But it turns out that there is an up charge to the up charge for certain varieties of fries in the combo deal. So when the sign says "make it a combo with fries and a drink for $3.00" what it really means is that you can make it a combo with BASIC fries for $3.00 but if you want truffle or buffalo fries, it's an EXTRA CHARGE on top of the $3.00 up charge. And then they don't tell you that when you're ordering either - they make it sound like ANY fries goes with the combo deal for $3.00, when that is not in fact the case. Kinda ticked off about the misleading sign and lack of information from the staff at checkout. Can you tell? To put the finishing touches on the experience, the floor covering on the walk to the restroom is extraordinarily slippery, like it's wet, but it's not. Then in the restroom itself, the floor is just as slippery, which makes for quite a challenging experience to say the least.

This is one of the tastiest burgers in Fort Collins. The burgers are all made to order and they also have hot dogs, fries, and milk shakes. They are famous for their 60/40 burger which is made from beef and bacon. It's a tasty treat! Pick and burger you like and change up the cheese flavor, etc. I prefer the New Mexico burger that has green chile on it. The Swiss Mushroom Burger is my #2. The fries, these are the best fries in town. I come here just for the fries. They are crispy show string fries and are soo good. They have truffle fries, buffalo, salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, dill pickle, and regular. They have great milk shakes all made with Haagen Daz ice cream and they are delicious. Ask for the daily special. Plenty of seating inside and in the summer there is seating outside. The restaurant is located in Old Town and there is ample parking all around. This is a great place to relax and enjoy tasty food.

This place is reasonably priced and the food is good. You are getting hamburgers and French fries. The French fry portions are big enough to feed two people. It is super busy most of the time. Just wait a few minutes and a table might open up or you can squeeze in to one of the center tables. There is also a picnic table outside.

I have nothing bad to say about this place. Every type of burger I've tried has been good, including the veggie one! The employees have always been nice and helpful. Yesterday, my dad surprised me with a visit and wanted a "really good burger" but he wasn't going to be in town until 11, and Big Als closes at 10. They were kind enough to put the bun and patty in separate containers so the burger wouldn't be soggy when he arrived. My dad loved the burger (60/40 obvs) and the truffle fries. He actually didn't put the burger down once while he was eating it.

I came to Big Al's because I had coupons for a $6 combo. And I'm glad I came! I got their 60/40 Burger, which has a 60% beef and 40% bacon patty. It was so flavorful! Amazing! I didn't like how greasy all of it was, but hey it's a burger. I also got their Parmesan truffle fries. It was such a nice treat, and I loved how they had A LOT of cheese on it. It is a very casual place, and the next time I am in Old Town for a quick bite, I'm sure I will come back. I want to try their hot dogs next time.

I find myself back at Big Al's more often than is probably healthy considering how much variety there is in Old Town. I suppose it is due to the consistent tasty food that they produce. When I'm eating healthier, a naked veggie burger with guacamole is great here, and of course when I'm not, a hippiecrit with bacon, and a huge pile of truffle fries is also great! They've had some excellent special burgers, fries, and shakes in my many visits. You won't be left with the same greasy, gut-busting feeling of Five Guys, which is nice. You might not be left saying "that is one of the best burgers I've ever had", but for the price it is an absolutely delicious burger (and I don't mean to damn them with faint praise, it's always good). The hot dogs are also tasty!

  • Jacob W.

Great burger and Fries. Got the 60/40, probably good with just a single but got a double. Duties were yay but a little over flavored. Coming from a guy who likes a lot of flavor! All in all great burger place for really good price.

I liked this place. I had a veggie burger and the patty was homemade. Not the frozen kind from the store like so many places have. It was a really good veggie patty and had black beans. The burger bun could be better. Kinda reminded me of the bun they have for a regular cheeseburger at McDonalds. Not too exciting. I had the regular fries and they were really, really good. They were shoestring fries and some of the best fries around. I tried some of the Salt and Vinegar fries. They were ok, I'm not into salt and vinegar stuff that much. Service was fast. You order at the counter and they bring it to you.

One of my favorite burger places in Fort Collins -- there is nothing on the menu that I wouldn't reccomend. The ambience is comfortably casual, with a couple tables to the side and two long communal benches through the center of the space. It's perfevt for small groups, but any group larger than five may find it difficult during the lunch or dinner rush. The burgers are great, but recently I've fallen for the hot dogs. They do a twist on the bun by squaring off the sides and grilling the outsides, giving each bite a slight crunch, but the dog... That's something else altogether. Paired with a side of truffle-fries and you're in fast-food heaven. Delicious! All in all, Big Al's provides a great balance of quality, speed and service that certainly deserves 5 stars. I highly reccomend it.

Needing a quick bite when you're out and about downtown? Then Big Al's ought to be your place rather than those other national-chain fast food joints. So, yeah, the menu consists of burgers, dogs, and the normal accoutrements (fries, shakes, etc.) but what they do they do exceptionally well. The hot dogs have that snap when you bite into them that a good hot dog with a natural casing should have. I believe that the veggie burgers are made in house -- I've had them packed thick and I've had them patted out thin, but they have always been delicious. Even their plain fries are a step above -- thin cut, crispy, and seasoned with Big Al's special blend of spices. Great people-watching if you sit at the window, too, since they're right across the street from the Rio and next to the Trail Head.

I got the 60/40 with Parmesan fries. The burger was an interesting texture because was a blend. I really liked it and tasty. The fries were great and very cheesy. My friend had the buffalo fries and did not think they were good. The fries and the buffalo seasoning didn't match well but my other food was great. Definitely suggest going there, a table might be hard to find because it is really busy.

Bummer. Was looking forward to a family friendly burger joint in ft. Collins on our way home from camping. With all the choices around sad this is what we chose. Loud loud loud. Could barely hear to order, we ended up sitting outside. Also wish I would have known it's not a sit down restaurant. The burgers were horribly greasy. The fries were nothing special. This looks a like a place that might be a great late night after the bars close place for college students. Having said that my kids did love the burgers and fries but for adults, the meal was too heavy. I could excuse the food and noise but then a trip to the bathroom yielded no paper towels and throwing away our food to an overflowing garbage can was just gross.

Fantastic gourmet and unusual burgers and great dogs! (Vegetarian too). The staff are always smiley and helpful, and I recommend you try whatever specialty shake they have on offer (the churro one is amazing)! They always have different art on the walls, showcasing local artists, so it's a fun, different experience every time!

Came in to grab a burger after getting into town. I got a 60/40 and the truffle fries. Both were extremely tasty. Not too much to say, other than it is a place I would go back to if/when in town and I want a burger and fries.

Expect a long wait- this place is popular. Enjoyed the hand made veggie burger with guacamole but it was honestly just average. Was more impressed by the fries- huge hit with everyone at the table. Salt & vinegar were quite good and son loved the dill pickle fries. Cashier was super friendly. Place is OK on cleanliness- but to be expected with large crowds. Fun stop but I think its popularity has more to do with its locality.

Nice, calm atmosphere. Chill, laid back, relaxed. The hot dogs super yummy. I wanted to eat more than one! French fries were crispy and thin cut! Perfect for chilly. Hamburgers looked on the small side; but still looked juicy and flavorful. I most definitely will be going back. Yum.....at Big AL ' s Burgers and Dogs.

Wow! Great burger and fries! Can't wait to try their shakes next time. Good atmosphere too.

  • Shoko C.

I had the burger made with 40% bacon ground into the patty and HOLY SMOKES I think I devoured the thing in seconds flat. WHY AREN'T ALL BURGERS MADE LIKE THIS?! The layout is definitely a bit confusing but it's very laid back so not a big problem. I went during Great Plates for a $5 burger and I think I went back like 3 times that week. The wait will be ridiculous though (worth it). Also, Parmesan fries? YES. GET THEM.

  • Joe Y.

Park your car in the parking garage located NE corner on Mason St. It's free the 1st hour then $1/hour after. 60/40 bacon burger is the highlight and their classic fries were very fresh like In-N-Out. Our friend approves the special Fat Tire beer cheese hotdog with a thumbs up.

  • Bryan R.

I like the burgers here. I wish they offered grass fed beef. I can't find it anywhere in town! This is ridiculous for Fort Collins.

This place is one of my favorite places for a burger. They beat out five guys any day. I especially love their avocado bacon burger and you can choose different kinds of "gourmet" fries which are all delicious. Every time I have been here there has been a line to the door, but we always managed to find a seat and it doesn't take long to get your food once you've put in your order.

  • Raquel C.

I was running around downtown and stopped in for a quick bite to eat. they have a long table running down the middle along with tables on the side on this day it was a full house but i managed to get a seat at the long table. its a pretty good burger for a fair price. glad i stopped in.

Easily one of the better burgers in Fort Fun. Fries are excellent, and prices are very reasonable for what you get. Can't recommend highly enough!

As a California native, it's hard for me not to compare burgers to InNOut. We tried this place for the first time last night and it was awesome! I had the BBQ Burger on a Gluten free bun and it was one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. There fries are awesome too. On another note, we ordered to go and the food was ready as soon as I got there (less than 10 minutes from when I ordered). We live in Old Town so I know we are probably going to eat at this place more than we should from now on!

Simple message for all vegetarians: this place ROCKS! After a really crappy experience at Stuft, a Burger Bar, we went to the QSR Big Al's and had MUCH better burgers, better service and a better time than at the Casual Dining, Full Service, more expensive burger place. Thank you Big Al's for making our July the 4th celebration really great after Suft Burgers incredibly inept and dreadful performance. Additionally, let me say the YOU ALWAYS EXCEED my expectations.

  • Jonathan D.

The burgers were ok. Nothing special. They advertise some unique fries. I just ordered plain and was pretty disappointed. The fries were tiny "bottom of the bag" type fries. Biggest fry in the whole order might have been 3 inches on a good day. The taste was average. The place was clean and the service was excellent. The price expensive for what we got. 1 burger and child's grill cheese, and 2 drinks came out to 22 dollars. For a few bucks more we could have had a really nice lunch at one of the surrounding restaurants.

Rating: 4.0/5 stars Stopped here after a lovely tour of the New Belgium Brewery. Business on a Sunday afternoon was robust, and seating was limited. We ordered at the counter and waited about 12-14 minutes for our order. M'lady had a really excellent cheese burger, and we shared an order of tasty french fries and a really good kraut covered hotdog. I got the double veggie burger, which was equally tasty with a hearty texture. We both did not realize until after ordering that the locally famous 60/40 burger was the way to go, but my arteries demand a break from the non-stop onslaught of pork products. Overall we enjoyed the burgers and would gladly return during a less busy time of the day.

great burgers but the fries are kinda strange. I'm not really into the season salt thing.

Yelp told me to eat here, so I did. I tried the cheeseburger, hot dog and fries. Yum! This place rocks! Everything I ate was excellent! There seems to be confusion amongst Yelp reviewers regarding this establishment, so let me break it down for you in it's simplest form. It's a Five Guys burger with a much better bun. The fries are just like In-N-Out except that you will have alot of scrap, bottom of the barrel, pieces. The hot dog is the best I've ever had. The layout is fine. I'm not a fan of the long tables down the middle. Customers walked in, some went to the right, some went left and were confused as to who would be next to approach the cashier at the end. We ended up being stuck eating at these middle tables and had to shared it with this girl who kept twitching and shaking the whole table. Not fun when you're eating. The person who delivered our food gave us the wrong order AND did the same to our twitching neighbors. I don't know their method for expediting orders from the window, but something ain't working right. It's FoCo so expect service from habitually forgetful and inattentive college kids. **MESSAGE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE REP** 11/19/2014 Why on Gods Green Earth would I want to email you?!?

Being originally from Illinois, one of the things that I have greatly missed since moving to Colorado was a good old Chicago style Red hot. While many of the negative reviews for this particular restaurant focus on some of the other hot dogs on the menu, I will give the Chicago Style Hot Dog served here my endorsement. Though the hot dog itself was not provided by Vienna Beef, it was more than adequate for me being all beef and snappy from its natural casing. The construction of the hot dog itself was also properly authentic, with a steamed poppy seed bun and first rate condiments -- yellow mustard, raw onion, neon green relish, sport peppers, tomatoes, a dill picker spear, celery salt, and most importantly, no ketchup. The fries are also excellent as they are freshly cut, but I usually opt for ordering an additional hot dog as they are small and inexpensive to begin with. Though I have not tried many of the burgers which this place is more famous for, I will definitely be coming back.

If we lived anywhere near downtown FoCo, we'd probably be at Big Al's at least once a week. Fortunately for our waistlines only, we live a solid thirty minutes away. As luck would have it we were in the area right around dinner and like a moth to a flame found ourselves at the counter of Big Al's. The veggie burger is the best veggie burger I've had. I opted for the guacamole burger this time and was really happy when I bit in to the slightly crispy buttery bun with a hit of garlicky guacamole and the salty goodness of the veggie burger. The hubs ordered the classic combo with the regular fries. I may have snagged some of his fries (allegedly) and as always they were crispy and salty with just the right amount of seasoning. Another fantastic burger experience.

Family of three went to eat at big Al's at lunchtime. We ordered three different types of french fries the only ones that were edible in our opinion where the plain the other two were very limp, soggy, old and dreadful. The Coney dog was extremely average could've made it better at home with the burgers we're okay the only good thing that we had ordered was the New York hotdog very tasty.

Probably the best "fast food" style burgers in town. Good topping options, good fries, good shakes. I am told their veggie burgers are great as well.

I don't eat meat, so Big Al's is the place I go for a tasty veggie burger. It's truly hard to find a burger sans-meat that is this delicious. Theirs is made in house with oats, black beans, and red peppers. I usually top mine with mushrooms and swiss which whisks me away to a time when barbecues were actually delicious (pre-vegetarian). No nasty frozen boca patties here! Also, be sure to try the truffle parmesan fries. Your taste buds will thank you.

If you order a shake, they bring that first before the entrée. I got a vanilla shake, it was so good. The 60/40 burger is the bomb (60% beef 40% bacon) make sure you have a big apetite, because this burger is HUGE!

Nothing is worse than being normal, especially in the fast-casual market, when it comes to the sort of food joints that people talk about and make a point to return to. No foodie I know feels compelled to share an experience from a place that doesn't stand out in some way. If I ask someone about this or that place, I can usually tell right away about how good it is based off of the level of enthusiasm (or lack thereof) their response is. Big Al's is welcome burger establishment that adds a unique component to the already diverse and competitive burger market in Fort Collins. They have several options that I have not seen on the menu of any other burger bar or restaurant, such as their famous 60/40 burger (60% beef / 40% bacon). Besides their burger options, they also have truffle fries, which may or may not be for everyone, but it's cool to have such an interesting alternative to the normal fry fare. As for the quality, I can attest from several visits that I've never been disappointed. Coming from someone that probably has beer for blood, I cannot tell you about the nutritional content of this food; however, when the food is this good you aren't' really thinking about how you'll need to burn off those calories later. You're just savoring the seasoning and the fatty/salty goodness of a juicy burger. They aren't the best burger joint in Fort Collins, but I would put them in the top 5. If I had to make a criticism, I would tell them to use better buns. The ones they use are just not visually appealing. Sure, they do job, but the appearance is important to me as well. There's nothing flattering about using the same buns that a school cafeteria uses. Overall, this place is really good, not great, but definitely somewhere I will return and recommend to others.

  • Kelley M.

I'm shocked that Big Al's doesn't have more reviews! This place has, hands down, the best veggie burger I've ever had. Seriously. Even meat eaters love it. Make it a truffle burger and you might die of ecstasy. Add a side of the truffle fries & you'll probably be asking for a job here. I can't personally speak for the meatier fare on the menu, but I hear that the 60/40 burger is life-changing and the less exotic meat burgers are juicy & perfect. I also love that it's local, the decor was taken from re-purposed materials out of a local grocery store that shut down and they're open super late on the weekends for those of you night-dwellers for whom chain fast food just won't do it.

  • Christine A.

My 3-star rating is based on price and not on the quality of the food. I cannot justify $4 for a hot dog. It was an amazing hot dog and the burgers were really good. The buffalo fries are delicious. Even more impressive was that all there packaging materials were compostable.

  • Bruce E.

I know you want to get the burgers, especially the special. Stick with classic with fries. Also give the classic dogs a try, they are done northeastern style, just mustard, no ketchup. Toasted bun and the dog fried in butter...

Dude! They have burgers that are 40% bacon and 60% beef. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I have very high standards. But so far it's the best burger I've had in Colorado so far:)

First experience review: i love burger and dog establishments so i figured I'd probably like this place. Not so much. The service is nice and the atmosphere is casual and relaxing but I was not impressed with the food. I love a good kraut dog so I decided to try the New York Dog. The kraut was dry and kinda bland. The dog and bun itself tasted just a little too salty as well. I also had the fries which weren't bad, but nothing exceptional either. This place is something of an acquired taste , I suppose.

This is my favorite burger joint in Fort Collins. The food is pretty great. I give it a few extra marks for modifying and enhancing the standard American burger without adding too much pretense to it. They also have a variety of hot dogs (the only place in town that I've found that does a Chicago dog) and milkshakes. Everything is quite good. I suggest trying the 60/40 burger with truffle fries. The service is fantastic as well. I have never been treated poorly, nor have I witnessed anyone being treated poorly, even during the late night drunk food sessions (this place stays open later on the weekends). On one particular occasion, I was stuck behind a large group order and had to wait a bit longer for my order to come through. Not only did the staff comp my meal, they gave me a gift card to comp my next meal. This place is pretty great. Be forewarned, come hungry: you will be served a large burger and a lot of french fries.

I ordered the 60/40 Burger with sour cream onion fries, and my Taiste buds got a treat. The portions are large, so you sure won't walk away hungry.

I feel like I should be ashamed. I just joined the site, but have been a Big Al's advocate since they opened. The great parts of Big Al's are what have made them a Fort Collins mainstay. Fresh, carefully prepared ingredients. Friendly, informative staff. Most of all, they have fostered a real connection to the community since day one. By sourcing their ingredients locally, giving local artists wall space, and replacing the requisite tip jar with a change jar, giving the proceeds to local charities. The truly amazing part of Big Al's is that they just keep getting better. In a market where most people age horribly, Big Al's strives to improve. Having hot dogs made by a local sausage maker is a simple touch, and a tasty and welcome one! Do yourself a favor. Go to Big Al's Burgers and Dogs, and see for yourself.

Ordered two chili dogs here and there was so much chili sauce that it was hard to find the hot dog. This place needs to learn that the chili should complement rather than overwhelm the taste of the hot dog. I ended up scooping most of the chili sauce off of the hot dogs and throwing it away. Even then the taste of the sauce was too much and masked the taste of the hot dog. The fries were very good however. Thin cut fries that were cooked just right and had a light amount of seasoned salt on them. I would go back here but only for the fries. I did not try the burgers.

Best burger place in a crowded Fort Collins burger scene. Great Old Town location, good atmosphere, great food and fair pricing. And to top it off, it's locally owned!

Holy freaking crap Big Al's is awesome. I just had it for the first time today, i've walked by it in the past but kinda shrugged it off until i heard someone talking about how good it was today. And my god its good. A lot of the inside is built from reconstituted materials from another business that was being torn down, it makes for a pretty cool look on the inside, also all the local art makes the inside a really nice place to be. So in terms of the decor the interior is awesome. As for the food, well some people might be turned off by the higher prices but your not getting a mcdonalds burger here your getting something WAY better. I had the 60/40 burger and this thing blows my mind. I was slightly worried about having that much bacon but it totally works, and I was also worried that the paddy would be super hard or crunchy because of the bacon in it but again, pleasant surprise, it wasn't. Instead what i got was the most fantastic tasting beef paddy I've ever tasted. Honestly, this may have been the best tasting burger I've ever had, and i order burgers freggin' everywhere. The combination of the beef and bacon results in this Burger textured paddy that tastes like you got a strip of bacon on it every time. I can't say enough good things about the paddy on this burger. The rest of the ingredients in the burger where super good as well. The onions are chopped up fairly small and sit on the grill for a little wile which brings out the sweetness of the onion, but its not overly sugary sweet or sugary at all. It complements the rest of the ingredients nicely. Also the bun, wile it looks simple enough brings a lot of flavor to the table. It's toasted, its soft, and its dank. Win. I went for the fancy Truffle Parmesan fry's and again, wow. Some other places leave you wanting for more Parmesan but not here, they LOAD that sucker up with the cheese. The frys are also fried perfectly, no soggy or overly hard frys here. One thing i noticed is the truffle flavor doesn't come on as strong as you might imagine, however if you let the aftertaste linger, you can tell its there. I enjoyed dunking these frys in ketchup even though its sort of blasphemy with such great ingredients on them, They taste great ether way. One thing i found pretty cool is EVERYTHING except the ketchup packets and the mustard packets at this place is compostable. All the trashcans go straight to compost. Additionally the hoods for their grills are energy efficient as well and turn off when not in use. Nice! I'm not sure if this building is LEED certified but i imagine its close if its not already. Now one thing that i was wondering on my drive home, is which is technically more green, composting everything or recycling as much as you can and composting the rest? Recycling reduces the amount of raw materials needed to be extracted from the earth in the manufacturing process, wile composting directly gives the materials back to the earth. You could probably write an entire paper on that subject but this is a restaurant review. Bottom line, if you like re-donk-ulously good burgers, like the earth, or like locally owned business this place is a pretty good bet.

I love a great burger joint and I search high-and-low to find one. So on my most recent trip to Fort Collins I found Big Al's and decided to try it based on reviews. I was not dissapointed - ok, a little bit on the 60/40 burger (turns out I don't love bacon enough) - but the second burger I ordered was a standard cheeseburger and it was perhaps the best burger I've ever had. I look forward to my next trip to Fort Collins so I can enjoy one of these amazing burgers.

The 60/40 burger was awesome. That's 60% beef, 40% bacon, 100% delicious. My only regret was getting the single cheeseburger instead of the double. My fiancee insisted on getting an order of truffle fries and I obliged. Even though I'm not a huge fan of truffle fries, I thought they were delicious. The only thing that would have made the fries better would be to have them regular style. This was the perfect dinner spot on July 4th. If I lived in Fort Collins you'd find me at Big Al's way too often, I might even be the duke! Sadly, I'm not. So I guess I'll only get to visit during cross country road trips.

Not a bad place to grab a burger or a hot dog. I ordered a cheese burger on my first visit there. Pretty good! they had truffle shoestring french fries which was also a plus! You can also go back to the soda fountain machine and get as many refills as you want(at least I didn't see a sign that said you couldn't). The people that worked there were nice and friendly and eager to please. What really sealed the deal in this place getting a four star rating is that I think that they have great local art on display and for sale! Most of it is modestly priced, so once I get a few other monetary projects out of the way I will be back to purchase a painting as well!

Can't really taste the truffle on the fries because they are so skinny. Can't really taste the truffle on the burgers either. Plenty of seating.

Not table service per se, but great burgers, dogs n fries. The Parmesan truffle fries rock. Very reasonable.

This place has a funky, hip, casual ambiance, the service was fast, and the food was tasty! I had a veggie burger with guacamole and we tried the truffle fries. So good! The veggie burger was unique, with a good mixture of beans, grains, and veggies (red peppers) and well-seasoned, which isn't true of a lot of veggie burgers I've experienced. Our server dropped one of our burgers on the ground, but she was professional about apologizing and getting us a new one (or at least a fresh wrapper). I appreciated that there was an option to order any one of their specialty burgers with a veggie patty. All the combinations were creative and looked tasty, including one called "The Hippie-crit," which included both a veggie patty and meat. Next time I'll try a milkshake!

i had to write a update to my previous one star review. I decided to give Big Al's another try. best restraunt experince of my life. went in and was greeted with a smile. i got the new york dog, without mustard and fries. the fries were thicker than normal which i LOVED! cooked to a perfect golden yellow. my hot dog was almost too much food for me. The dog was perfectly seasoned with sauerkraut and onions. i feel like this company has stepped up since the last time i've been there. i will be visiting again soon.

So, the nice thing about Big Al's is that it's just burgers and hot dogs, maybe some fries, but that's it really. Not one's to over-complicate things. What they do with what they have is pretty damned good. So, the cool about Big Al's is just about everything in there is recycled/reused/re-purposed from an old building or previous place. Example: giant vent hoods from the old Steele's Market up the street re-purposed as funky lighting, 1950's era cabinets hold up the soda machines, old stairway banisters cover the counter, and wood panels of every old, sun-bleached color cover the walls from the chair rail down. Even the soda cups & straws are compostable. Gotta give it up to a place that puts in the effort there. So, the awesome things about Big Al's are the service, the truffle fries with "naughty sauce," and the hours. The gal that took our order, and a couple other employees came by to check on us, and even offered to refill our sodas - extra mile +1. They cut fresh fries in-house and for a bit more you can get them covered in Parmesan cheese and truffle oil and dip 'em in a special "naughty sauce" that reaches a new level of awesome in the "Book of Stuff That Doesn't Suck." Not to mention that you can get some until 1am on Thu, Fri, and Sat night. Cheap, tasty, friendly, cool, open.

Fort Collins seems to be getting an influx of of higher end, more gourmet burger joints lately, a step up from fast food but not quite the sit down, giant sandwiches you get at sit down restaurants. Five Guys and Smashburger were already here when I moved in a few years ago and since we've had Larkburger, Stuft, and now Big Al's open, the latter two in the Old Town area. How does Big Al's stack up? Pretty well, I'd say. The fries are tasty, though with more salt than some might think. The burgers are decent, though I would argue not quite to the level of Five Guys quality. More like Wendy's, which I would say is one of the better cheap fast food burgers, but upgraded to justify their higher prices. They're like a stepping stone between the cheap fast food places and the real, higher end burgers. And they're still good. Maybe not as amazing as I remembered the first time I visited, but still worth the occasional trip back. With the fries, the refillable drinks, and the decent burgers, it's a contender in the town's burger sweepstakes.

Love their 60/40 burger, 40% bacon, come on! How can you go wrong. The fries are great too. Never had a burger there I didn't like, or anything for that matter. Puts lark burger to shame! Plus it's in old town, always a fun time.

The staff is always friendly, the place is always clean, and they go out of their way to make sure the customer is satisfied. Case in point: I've been ordering off-menu items on a weekly basis for probably 6 months, and have never been charged extra.

This is the best quick (but I wouldn't really call is fast food) burger joint in the Fort. The truffle fries are amazing and you should absolutely try the hippiecrit (double patty of meat and veggie burger). My wife says the dogs are good. This is definitely the place to go when you want a quick or late-night burger.

I have two visits now to Big Al's so I can write a review. The first visit was a week ago, it was really slow on a Monday night and the burger was simply out of this world, for sure the best burger in Ft. Collins. The fries were fresh and cooked exactly to make them delicious. The second visit was only average, it was busier and the fries tasted like they had been sitting for 10 minutes before we got there. However, in summary, I would recommend it over Five Guys because it is better and it's less money.

One of the best burgers in town!!!!!! Shakes are very delicious. The truffle fries are a must. Great quality food that is reasonably priced. My go to place for a good juicy burger.

As others have said, the 60/40 is pure genius. I wish the patty were a bit thicker though. The buns weren't anything special, but the burger as a whole was quite tasty. My other half opted for the southwest veggie burger. They are house made (not boca or morningstar) - most similar to the black-bean morningstar burger, but 10 times better. They are soy based. She loved it. The fries are quite tasty, the potatoes are freshly sliced (like in'n'out .... and other than the seasoning, they taste similar!). The decor is also pretty neat. Overall, worth checking out.

Great burgers! Truffle fries were amazing also. Wish they had a little more variety with burger toppings and that they served beer. I did really like the way everything was recyclable.

My wife and I were in Fort Collins and used Yelp to find a good burger. Good luck finding a parking space on the street in front of the business, luckily there is a big parking garage around the corner. Parking is free for the first hour and only $1.00 per hour after that. The menu is very small at Big Al's. 6 or 8 burgers, 3 or 4 dogs, fries, and drinks. We ordered the 60/40 burger, truffle fries, and a drink. This was truly one of the best tasting burgers I have ever had. They take ground bacon and mix it with ground beef. The ratio is 60% beef 40% bacon. This isn't like your everyday bacon burger, you get tasty bits of bacon in every bite. The burger has a slice of cheese (American cheese, I think) that is perfectly melted. The Truffle fries were good, but you couldn't taste the truffle oil on them due to the amount of Parmesan cheese. I will definitely go back next time I am in Fort Collins!

Sweet Mother of God and Burgers! This place is amazing. The 60/40 burger blew my mind! 60% beef and 40% bacon, that's all the needs to be said. Fries are balling as well. I had to stop here twice during my 5 day trip. I will be coming back to this place as often as I can.

Sometimes, less is more. I take this phrase to heart when it comes to decorating my home. If you've ever been to my house, it looks like we just moved in even though we've been here for three years. There's not much on the walls and only the essentials are arranged in the room. I'm a minimalist when it comes to design. I also feel that the more nice things we have, the more potential there is for the kids to ruin them. My affinity for the minimalist lifestyle goes beyond home decor and expands into my culinary tastes as well. Sometimes, less is more - less salt, less options, less cost. Big Al's Burger's & Fries is on the same page...almost. Big Al's opened earlier this June in Old Town on Mountain. They are snug up against a bunch of other eateries on the same stretch - Snooze, The Rio, Enzio's, Austin's, Walrus Ice Cream, Trail Head and La Creperie. Locally owned and operated by Steve Taylor's Hot Corner Concepts restaurant ring (whom also covers Austin's, Enzio's and Moot House), Big Al's is the restaurant in the bunch that keeps to that minimalist motto, especially with their menu of burgers, hot dogs, fries and milkshakes - and that's it. While Big Al's concept, menu and decor is pleasantly minimalistic and uncomplicated, many of their food items do not follow suit. With the exception of their hot dogs (which I think are real winners), if they scaled back on the seasoning, they would benefit from less is more.

Finally - a quick, cheap and tasty burger joint in Old Town Fort Collins. I'm a big fan of the truffle fries, and the naked bacon cheese burger fills the bill when I am hankering for a burger, sans bun (and gluten). The place is as earth-friendly as they come. Everything, with the exception of the ketchup and mustard packets, is composted rather than going to the landfill. Gotta love that. Locally owned and delicious. Thumbs up.

Another winner in Old Town Fort Collins! Big Al's is a nice addition to the old town scene... they really do only three things - burgers, hot dogs, and fries. Luckily, they do them pretty well, at a good price, and with great service in a fun location. Hot dogs here are great - and they have a number of options Burgers are good - not quite as good as five guys maybe, but also way less expensive Fries are good, but a bit overseasones. Maybe next time I'll asked for unseasoned fries, and use the seasoning at the table. I was really impressed with the friendliness of the employees - great attitude, and helps endear me to the restaurant. And -- great price! About as cheap of a meal as you'll get in Old Town!

Gave this place a second chance. Will not warrant a third. Too expensive for a mediocre hotdog and fries. I do enjoy the local artwork inside, so stop by and check that out, even if you do not plan on eating here.

I am a vegetarian and even in Ft Collins it can be hard finding a great burger. Well, I am looking no further. This place is awesome! Get the seasoned fries too, so, good. Can't wait to go back.

I've heard alot about this place before I moved to town. When I arrived I just shrugged it off, kept passing it by... my boyfriend and I went in on a whim and I was proven wrong. This restaurant is a rare gem. He got the 6040 burger(60 percent burger, 40 percent bacon!) and it was amazing. The truffle fries were a perfect addition..but needed two people to finish they were so filling :)

Had the New Mexico burger only, solid burger one comes to expect at many of today's boutique burger joints. Bun was fresh and it had just the right amount of heat. Service was great, had my order to go and was offered cup of water while I waited. 3 stars in my book means it's a fine option.

So I live in Denver and rarely go to Fort Collins, but whenever I do I get VERY excited about the truffle fries and truffle veggie burger that I'm going to have. There are so few reviews of this place, but don't let that turn you away! It's sooo yummy. I'm going to FoCo tonight and can hardly contain myself :)

I am a real cheeseburger snob .. it was ok, nothing really knocking my socks off. By itself the cheeseburger is decently priced, but the combo deal offers no real savings and the fries tasted green and were soggy. losses value with the combo. I will try again but the price is a bit of an issue, especially when competing with other nearby restaurants also offering burgers and fries. This is a whats in it for me economy and this place can't rest on its burger taste alone.

  • Scott E.

You can't get a gourmet burger for a better price. Worth the drive, even for me. People whine about no Inn-n-Out burger in Colorado, or this or that. Just tell the person behind the counter what you want @ Big Al's, and they'll do it, if they have the ingredients. Sure, there menu is simple, but their staff even understands the "secret" InO menu, plus you can make up your own. GOOD stuff!

I'm a huge fan of burgers and hot dogs - so I was super excited when I saw that the folks from Austins/Enzios/Moot House were opening up a burger/hot dog place in old town. I've been there several times now - and was only really impressed with their food once. The burgers just seemed a bit on the greasy side for me - and left me feeling like I had just eaten a brick. I do want to go back and try their hot dogs - hopefully those will be a better experience than their burgers.

Best Hot dog I ever had. Snappy salty and yummy. Great bun also, toasted just right. They did it right. My hat is off to you.The price was right also. lets make this short and sweet, shall we??? on the comment card for this joint after eating a single cheese burger and some truffle fries... my only comments were "i would take my pants off... and sit on this" done and done. (and we went back the next week and i got a "naked burger" and was EVEN MORE DELIGHTED) Love this place. Love!

Great burger and fries for the late night hunger. Reminded me of five guys when it came to the fries but the burger was the real star. Melted cheese running down the sides on an amazing bun. Plus supporting the local economy and not being too expensive make this place a winner.

Oh my god, I've fallen in love with a burger. And that burger's names is the 60/40. 60% beef, 40% bacon. How come no one has ever thought of this before? I LOVE LOVE LOVE this burger and I'm glad they brought it back. My friend said they had it only for one week before and just brought it back this week, so I'm glad he took me. I don't know if a regular beef patty will ever be the same. It's about $5 for the burger, which for that amoount of bacon, I would gladly pay $10 for! I also liked the decor, painted wood trim and old fencing material, along with local artwork. Gave it a nice feel

We have gone here three times now. Every time the food has tasted very good. Also, every time, literally, our order has been processed incorrectly. The veggies I request on or not on my burger are always wrong. The order either comes out missing something or with the wrong stuff on our burgers. We love the atmosphere; it's very kid friendly IMO. I like that they recycle too. Despite the frequent mistakes, we do like it and will most likely return. Now we just expect them to mess it up ;)

I was extremely excited to see Big Al's Burger and Dogs come to town. I have been waiting to have a great dog, but due to a bet with a friend, I had a triple veggie burger instead of dog. I love beef, but the veggie burger is great. I have been back four times. One of the clerks mentioned a "Checkered" Burger with is three pattys, one Veggie and two Beef. It is absolutely amazing. I live near 5 Guys Burger & Fries and Smashburger. It is worth the drive to Downtown FoCo.

I went here after hitting the bars in Old Town, and it was a HUGE improvement compared to the normal DP Dough I order at that time of night. The truffle fries were amazingly delicious and the burger was juicy. I wanna go back right now! Maybe I will...

Good burgers, great fries, excellent saucey sauce. Couldn't help but not care about the compostable theme... Meh. Didn't feel it justified the $8+ combo meal.

I would say Big Als is better than 5 Guys (which is not saying much) although both are very expensive for what you get. Big Al's menu is simple to read, although the options are very limited. I do believe Big Als is local (although I am not positive) which is a huge plus, although at all said and done, they are very expensive for fast food.

  • Who W.

The place looks nice, the server was friendly, they get good points for their recycle program. But, when it comes to the burgers, I would definitely say "I've experienced better..." at Five Guys. The fries keep them from getting a 1 star, pretty tasty, thin and crispy.

  • Catherine K.

The burgers are delicious! My husband and I were craving a burger and just wanted to find a basic burger joint. Well, Big Al's satisfied! Simple menu, delicious burgers! I got a plain ol burger, and their sauce gives it an added burst of flavor. BUT my husband got the Bacon, Guacamole Burger which was super delicious! I'll get that one next time. The fries were also delicious and fresh! Enjoyed the art on the wall as well. AND we paid only $16 for both of us to eat with burgers, fries and unlimited drinks. That's the same we pay to eat at Subway. Foods good and so are the prices!

Just had my first Big Al's experience. Delicious hot dog (Chicago style) and fries. The hot dog had wonderful mouth feel -- good crunch in the skin, firm meat on the inside. The bun was perfectly steamed but not soggy, and the additions were great. The shoestring fries are hand-cut in-house -- fresh tasting with great seasoning. One of the guys behind the counter came around to ask what I thought of the food, and he expressed his concern about having the hot dog buns be soft but not soggy; he really cared. (I believe I heard the counter guys say that the beef for the burgers is grass-fed, no antibiotics, bought in Denver.) Everything but the tray is compostable -- paper, soda cup, straw.

    (5)
  • Lauren R.

  • Charisse O.

  • Chuck R.

Great burger and Fries. Got the 60/40, probably good with just a single but got a double. Duties were yay but a little over flavored. Coming from a guy who likes a lot of flavor! All in all great burger place for really good price.

  • Erin F.

YES. GET THEM.

    (3)
  • Who W.

The place looks nice, the server was friendly, they get good points for their recycle program. But, when it comes to the burgers, I would definitely say "I've experienced better..." at Five Guys. The fries keep them from getting a 1 star, pretty tasty, thin and crispy.

  • Jeremiah G.

Place is great, great 60/40 burger! 60% beef 40% bacon. Would be much better if they had Poutine.

Had the 60/40 burger alongside my truffle fries. Really tasty and really satisfying. Pricing aligns with what you get. Really enjoyed this place for my first time. Will definitely go back.
